Not everyone is comfortable with the pain that can come with vaccines. Lots of kids grow up with a fear of needles and doctor visits, making routine wellness visits an all-out war. That fear may turn the children into adults with phobias.
Thankfully scientists have developed a novel needle-free vaccine that dissolves in the mouth. According to the author of the study Maria Croyle, this new method for delivering vaccines is far more effective than conventional approaches.
Croyle said, “My research group has developed a novel method to stabilize live viruses and other biological medicines in a rapidly dissolving film that does not require refrigeration and can be given by mouth.”
“Since the ingredients to make the film are inexpensive and the process is relatively simple, it could make vaccine campaigns much more affordable. Large quantities could be shipped and distributed easily given its flat, space-saving shape.”
It took years for Croyle’s team to develop this technology. This task was very difficult, as many of the early formulations either killed the organism as the film formed or crystallized it during storage.
